Rudolf Diesel was a German engineer and inventor. He was trying to find a way to improve the internal combustion engine.

In 1892 he invented the first compression ignition engine, which ran on a powder made of finely ground coal dust. It was new technology - mainly because it did not require a spark ignition coil nor any spark plugs - and he got a patent for it.

From that time onwards it became known as the "Diesel Engine".
