What is the difference between high beams and low beams?

Low beam aims the light down to the ground and sideways and doesn't shine very high.

Low beams are designed like this so that they don't blind cars in the opposite direction and cars infront of you.

High beam is designed to give you maximum visibility but it blinds other drivers.
