Tightening timing belt on 1993 Honda Prelude?
There are two types of tensioners for the prelude if you have an H23 (non vtec) then it is manual, if it is an H22 (vtech) then it is auto tensioner. due to failures with the auto tensioner it is highly recommended to swap over to a manual tensioner if you have an H22. As for the answer to the question, go to Preludepower.com or search the web for the repair manual to download, it is free and legal. Hope this helps. Because the design of the engine does not allow clearance between the valves & pistons without the belt being intact and the timing set correctly. If the belt breaks and a valve is fully open, the valve stops and stays open. The piston however keeps moving until the engine comes to a complete...

To even out the tension in the belt, use a spanner or socket wrench on the crankshaft-pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft two full turns clockwise.Tighten the locking bolt first to hold the tensioner in its new position.Tighten the pivot-spring bolt, which has a precise torque setting.
The factory recommended mileage/time interval for replacing the timing belts on the Honda Odyssey is 10 years or 105,000-miles, whichever comes first. That being said the type of driving, environment, how often the engine was run, and so on can create conditions where a much earlier interval is a...
Your owner's manual is a good resource and will indicate the mileage interval recommended for your specific vehicle make and model.Depending on the manufacturer of the vehicle, mileage ranges for recommended timing belt replacement is anywhere from 60,000 miles to 100,000 miles and 6-10 years old.
Some Honda engines are timing belt and others are chain.A belt will need to be changed at regular intervals (usually at 90-120k miles) whereas a chain is generally good for the life of the engine and does not require maintenance. As a side note ALL Honda engines are interference engines.
I am not sure if it has any but if there is they will be down on the crank shaft pulley
The Honda Jazz or Honda Fit uses a cam chain. No maintenance is required.
Any reputable mechanic can do this job. Check around with different auto repair shops and get estimates. Check with family or friends and see who they recommend.
Normal driving conditions, 105,000 miles.Severe driving conditions, 60,000 miles. This is an interference engine.

It needs a new belt tensioner probably, on needs tensioned properly. [email protected]
You don't. The belt tension is automatically adjusted via a spring loaded tensioner. If the serpentine belt is noisy or worn out prematurely. replace the tensioner. The belt should be inspected for cracks and other signs of wear. Replace worn out belt(s) before they break leaving you stranded.

If the timing belt snaps, they run into each other, causing bent valves (most common), cylinder head or camshaft damage, and possibly piston and cylinder wall damage. While it is possible that no damage could occur from a snapped belt on an interference engine, such a case is unlikely.
You should be able to find a shop manual for this at the local library...make copies of the right pages...good luck:)
hyow much play on the belt do you have. and also if there is any cracking of the belt replace now.
