Transportation is any motion through space by humans or other intelligent species. There are many modes of transportation. Transportation involving the use of the muscles of the living body include walking, running, swimming, crawling, climbing, jumping, and flying. Vehicles are machines used by humans for the purpose of facilitating transportation thereby reducing or eliminating the effort of the muscles. Vehicles include the following: (1) horse-drawn carriages; (2) bicycles; (3) motorcycles; (4) automobiles; (5) trains; (6) watercraft (e.g. boats, ships); (7) aircraft (e.g. airplanes, helicopters); (8) spacecraft (e.g. space shuttles, space stations). In addition, there are also vehicles for vertical transportation within buildings or other structures such as elevators and escalators. Public spaces such as airports and shopping malls sometimes use automated walkways for horizontal transportation.
