How can you find out what the speed limiter - governor - in your car is set to?

Cars & Vehicles
Rules of the Road
Education

You should check with your auto dealer or manufacturer. A mechanic who specializes in the make of your vehicle might also be able to help you. Take the vehicle out on the freeway and give it all she's got. Check your speed and you should easily be able to tell what the max speed is and that is what your governer is set at. Generally vehicles are set to cut out at 100 mph. Depending on the year of your car and the type of tansmission it may not even govern out until the valves open and close so fast that they "float" meaning they neither open nor close and thus cut the engine rpm to a more sustainable speed. I have an 1988 Mustang with a four cylinder in it and I am yet to govern it out or make the valves float even at speeds of up to 180 km/h.
