When a car dealer appears to be taking an excessive amount of time repairing the switch for your engine fan - how can you confirm what is actually being done?

The switch is usually a temperature sensor in the coolant. On my car I can change it in a hour. Now my guess is either they miss-diagnosed the problem, (maybe it's a relay on the circuit and not the sensing switch) or they haven't gotten to it and are making excuses, or it's in a rediculous place...
